What is ICD all about?
InterCultural Dialogues (ICD) is a unique discussion-based course that pursues racial justice and promote diversity on the UW-Madison campus — created and led by undergraduate students. Since 2005, over 1,000 students have participated in the course. See what former students say about their experience in ICD.
Students in ICD:
(1) Are introduced to sociological concepts and theories about social life, as they pertain to race and ethnicity and other intersecting identities, racial domination, and social change,
(2) Engage in ongoing personal reflection and civic participation in contemporary social issues, and
(3) Develop critical thinking and other skills necessary to make the crucial connections between the social and the personal, between theory and action, and between concepts and lived experience.

What is a typical class like?
Each week, "labs" (discussion sections) center around race and the intersection of other issues and identities like class, education, religion, interracial relationships, nationality, sexuality, and more. During labs, students delve into sharing their personal experiences, linking their individual experiences to what they're learning through readings and activities. You can read more details in the sample syllabus (below).
