Are there prerequisites?
There are no academic prerequisites for the course. Any undergraduate student at UW-Madison can apply. However, enrollment requires prior permission from the Instructor after filling out a brief application. Given the course's emphasis on personal experiences and situating them in within broader sociological analysis, a strong candidate for ICD will demonstrate a willingness to learn—not only in terms of intellectual engagement, but also personal reflection and interpersonal engagement. Catch a glimpse of what a typical class is like.
Students in ICD enroll in Sociology 205, which counts for 3 introductory-level credits. As of the Fall 2016 semester, ICD is considered an "Ethnic Studies" course. ICD may not satisfy your major's requirement for a social science class. (Check with your academic advisor.)

I completed Soc 205. How can I stay involved in ICD?
Leadership: After taking the class, you have the opportunity to apply to be an apprentice or a facilitator in Sociology 206. The apprenticeship program offers semester-long training program in intergroup facilitation, including observation of an ICD class and opportunities for hands-on experience. Select ICD students are recruited to lead the core ICD class for credit as a facilitator. Facilitators and apprentices participate in intensive training and receive guidance from former facilitators. If you've completed Sociology 205 and are interested in applying to be an ICD leader, contact the instructor at [email protected].
Volunteer: On a case-by-case basis, and depending on the current needs of ICD, the instructor will offer opportunities for students to stay involved in ICD in capacities beyond the facilitation and apprenticeship courses. Please contact the instructor if you are interested.
Alumni: We are building an ICD Alumni Network! Complete this contact form to sign up to be apart of this new initiative. We would love to hear the impact ICD has made on you and any ideas you have to reach out to ICD alumni.
